Alexander Technique at OM yoga:
Group Class Series

New classes coming in 2008: check back for more information!

The Alexander Technique aims to restore the natural balance and coordination of your body. During a lesson, your teacher guides you with words and light touch to approach movement differently. Through this interaction, you learn to suspend your habitual responses to external stimuli, maximizing your efficiency and ease of movement. There is no strenuous physical exertion involved, only very gentle manual guidance by the teacher.

Alexander Technique is not a quick "fix" for stress or injury. The ultimate goal is to enable you to achieve greater physical awareness and freedom within the regular activities of everyday life. Benefits include a freeing of the whole body, a reduction of pain and stress, and an increase in poise and comfort.

In this 3 week class series you will learn the basic concepts of Alexander Technique and explore how these principles relate to your daily life. In each class, we will:

  1. Review core concepts of the Alexander Technique
  2. Explore basic Alexander Technique concepts in various activities, both individually and with partners, including simple everyday movements like sitting, squatting, standing, and walking.
  3. Discuss and experiment with ways that the Alexander Technique can help to overcome the unique physical challenges of more specialized activities and ways of moving—from holding a yoga pose, to working at a computer, to speaking in public.

No special equipment or workout clothing is required; please wear everyday clothes that allow for reasonable freedom of movement.
