Student Quotes"I was recovering from a knee injury and multiple surgeries when I first sought out Alexander therapy with Kate. I was actually on crutches for our first sessions. I hoped that Alexander would help me to avoid the back and shoulder injuries so common with prolonged use of crutches and canes. I also figured, as I was limping along, if I had to learn to how walk again, I wanted to learn how to do it “correctly,” i.e., with that beautiful, easy posture that my actor and dancer friends exhibit! Since I couldn’t yet walk, we started out with table work, where I could relax and not worry about losing my balance or any leg pain. Not only did Kate help me with my back and shoulders, but the session really complemented the work I was doing with my Physical Therapist. We could go through my PT exercises, zero in on tensions, problems, and pain issues, and by learning how to work with my body, and not against it, it made the exercises more effective and actually sped up my recovery. Kate was also my personal coach, reminding me of the victories along the rehab road, and her enthusiasm made the work really enjoyable. Kate’s students all know how effective she is as a teacher – we all feel deeply indebted to her. Her methods have not only helped me with walking, but with my office work on the computer, and in many other everyday activities that cause negative body habits and pain. Becoming aware of all that extra muscle tension we carry around and learning to release it feels heavenly! So many little aches and pains go away, and there's a lightness that I'd never felt before. I highly recommend anyone recovering from an injury, or working with a Physical Therapist, to also seek out the complementary work with Kate and the Alexander method. You’ll be glad you did. It led me to a quicker and speedier recovery than my doctors even thought was possible. Thanks Kate!" -- Mary Beth, Grant Administrator
"Studying Alexander Technique with Kate has been extraordinary and, with awareness that this might sound melodramatic, life changing. Having studied dance and yoga for over 17 years I thought I had a good sense of body awareness but every lesson with Kate felt like new worlds had opened up for me. If I had to isolate the one largest thing I've learned from my studies with Kate it is the enormous, seemingly limitless, ability we have to alter patterns of posture and movement that feel set in stone. Immediately after a session I felt like I was flying, my body was so free. What I think makes Kate really special is the sense of play she brings to the work. It is hard not to share in the joy she obviously has in these explorations. While Alexander Technique might sound like it would make you paranoid (always trying to find the perfect posture!) her approach allows the work to be just plain old fun. She's one of the most infectious people I've ever met. I wholeheartedly recommend studying with her to anyone with even the slightest interest in Alexander Technique." -- Kyle, Dancer and Yoga Instructor
"Kate's group classes provide just the right introduction to Alexander Technique: straightforward and simple explanations of Alexander's key principles, the opportunity to explore these principles both individually within the group and working with the group as a whole, handouts and "homework" assignments, and the invaluable assist of being active witness to the transformation, not only of yourself, but of your peers, colleagues, and soon to be friends." When working with Kate in private sessions, I find myself not only experiencing seeming endless moments of epiphany (both bodily and emotionally), but also giggling and laughing the entire time. This humor and delight that Kate brings to our times together gives me a sense of trust and ultimately a sense of freedom. I feel these "light" interactions on a subject that can be taken so seriously enables us to work together as peers, as both teachers and students, and as friends in exploring my habits, fears, needs, desires, questions, and joys." -- Musetta, Dancer
"I always look forward to going to Kate's classes because she makes the experience fun and relaxing - her laughter is infectious. After a session I feel as loose as if I had just gotten a massage. Before I started coming to see Kate I had resigned myself to chronic knee problems, but after learning about Alexander Technique my knee has improved so much that I can go hiking again without fearing that I won't be able to talk the next day. " -- Mila, Student "Working with Kate is a joy! She teaches me how to integrate Alexander Technique into my practical everyday life. Using humor and gentle guidance, Kate brings me into a deeper relationship with myself. Working with Kate has brought me to a stronger independent place where I am not dependent on her bringing me into my full potential, but rather I am. Kate empowers, inspires and loves her students into who they can truly be." -- Jenna, Teacher "Kate is one of the most positive, accepting, upbeat people I know. Her enthusiasm and great skill have allowed not only my body, but also my mind and spirit to come into greater alignment. I always leave feeling deeply relaxed, spacious, and like I wish I could take her with me!" -- Blair Glaser, spiritplay.org "Kate is everything a teacher ought to be: clear in her instructions and inspiring in her example, with signature warmth and compassion. She is keen to contextualize your physical limitations/goals within your wider life, and this holistic approach means that a lesson never feels discrete or abstract but is instead easily applicable. Alexander technique, and this outstanding teacher, have changed the way I think about motion, posture, gravity and efficiency -- and as a result, the way I move and carry myself. The difference is marked, and even my mom, a former dancer who has complained about my slouch since I was 10, admits that now I 'stand and walk beautifully." -- Emma, Editor "As a physician, I am quite familiar with the problems that bad body posture can bring. I became, therefore, concerned about the poor posture habits my young twin daughters had started to develop. Kate's approach to the issue at hand was phenomenal. She had a thorough knowledge of body functioning, and most important she was able to convey the principles of the technique clearly and interestingly using medical models and other demonstrative teaching devices. Kate showed interest in my children's needs and activities and she customized the lessons accordingly. After a short time, the desired improvement in posture and poise could be noticed. Moreover, Kate's methodic approach to Alexander Technique has allowed us to apply its principles independently after the lessons were concluded." -- Michael, Neurologist "Studying the Alexander Technique has brought a greater awareness to myself in most everything I do---that might sound grandiose, but as Kate always says, 'How you think is how you move.' It's astounding how much tension most of us walk around with. It's even more amazing that we've all become so accustomed to it that it feels normal. Alexander Technique has really helped me to find out what my neutral state is and how to move from that vital, balanced state. It's about much more than 'posture,' it's really about mindful 'use' of your self, physically and mentally. While it's very beneficial to performing artists and body work professionals, I truly believe that anyone from any walk of life would benefit from studying it and would find numerous applications in their daily life." -- Ryan, Dancer "For years, I had been interested in finding a deeper sense of awareness and a release from tension caused both by the world around me and by myself. I wanted to find more focus and clarity in my everyday life. I wanted a way of recognizing bad habits and allowing more positive "energy" and "thoughts" to surface through relaxation. While I had been introduced to the concept of Alexander Technique by several people, I never found a suitable environment to study - an environment of support, fun and ease. Kate provided that environment, and her curiosity, humor and warmth allowed me to discover so much more than I thought was possible." -- Ben, Urban Planner "Kate's contagious sense of humor, her clear communication, and her instructional touch assisted my rehabilitation following a frightening injury. With her assistance, my body learned to trust itself and learned to unravel layers of fear, pain, and tension. I am so thankful I found Kate and recommend her highly." -- V.J., Dancer/Pilates Instructor "As a dancer I was interested in knowing more about the Alexander Technique. Kate has proved to be a fantastic teacher; she's able to answer the most detailed questions and also help me to apply them to my body as a whole. I feel that she has given me a really valuable set of tools -- a way of thinking about the body that makes sense anatomically. Through the technique I have found more possibilities for release of tension then I ever thought possible. This, in turn, has opened up a broader range of movement potential." -- Anne, Dancer "Kate's class offered me a gentle introduction to the Alexander Technique. I didn't know anything about the technique, except that my doctor recommended it for my RSI injuries. Kate presented the concepts so clearly I found myself wondering how I'm able to stand, sit, or work in any other way. From the first class I found myself with a new set of mental tools that helped me work without pain and relax." -- Ken, Computer Programmer "Kate's enthusiasm is contagious, and her class is always fun. Each time I leave I am happier and more open, and feel taller and more relaxed than when I came in. This work is changing my body and my well-being. My movements are more relaxed, my posture is better, and I'm more coordinated." -- Diana, Massage Therapist "I have been working out avidly for four years in the martial arts, doing a lot of grappling, lifting as well as some boxing and Thai boxing exercises. The Alexander Technique has definitely aided in my use and understanding of my own body. I have a much greater feel and knowledge of myself than ever before, not only how the body works, but my own habits which prevent optimal use. I rely a lot less on pure muscle strength and strain than I did; when I truly give in to the directions, I am a lot more powerful than I could ever be using muscle tension. Kate's Alexander's classes have been instrumental in this process. Her sessions are always thought-provoking and I always come away very optimistic, with a stronger sense of the process. That's the key word, process, because it is a never-ending search. But what is most important about Kate's sessions is that she brings a real NON-JUDGMENTAL THINKING to the work, which is at the heart of Alexander's concepts, and a gift to any student." -- Eric, Recruiter and Martial Arts Practitioner "I found Kate through her website. And, I found a caring, knowledgeable and passionate teacher. Since I'm a part time adult literacy teacher, I appreciate the dedication she has to her work and her students. Most importantly, I appreciate her commitment to providing an effective technique that can help us regain our understanding of the natural, easy way we can move. I learned a lot from Kate in a short time." --Caryn, Teacher "Initially, I became interested in the Alexander Technique because I had a chronic knee injury experienced in dance class. Physically, throughout my instruction with Kate, I have found more freedom, ease, and strength in my dance movement. Unexpectedly, my experience with the Alexander Technique has also deepened my understanding between the connections and unity of the mind, body and spirit." --Fred, Dancer "I had no idea what to expect in my first Alexander session, but since then Kate has become my Jiminy Cricket--the voice that I need to hear in the back of my head, reminding me to lift, open, and lead. Taking Alexander Classes has changed not only how I play my violin, but also the little things I do daily that contribute to tension and stress. The classes are amazing--I am often awed by how different I feel after just one session, and this carries over into other areas of my life. I will never walk or sit or brush my teeth without also thinking about HOW I'm doing it ever again!!" --Emily, Violinist/Student
"From
my job, which involves hours at the computer at a weekly magazine (typing and
talking to writers on the phone), I felt I was starting to 'collapse' in the
middle of my back. Attempts to 'straighten up' resulted in creating another
state of tension. I came to my first Alexander Technique class with Kate
with a sense of having lost some 'peripheral vision' while also feeling a bit
cut off in a general sense. -- Rebecca, Copy Editor Aimingup.com Home Page |
